Councils have a pivotal role in environmental management, including regulation and education. Increasingly, councils are pursuing initiatives to reduce their environmental footprint such as stormwater improvements, waste education, and biodiversity protection initiatives.
Councils are also well placed to lead by example, and inform and encourage their communities (households, businesses etc) to take up environmental improvement programs and initiatives.
In recognition of this multi-faceted environmental role, Local Government NSW (LGNSW) continues to advocate and conduct projects on a number of environmental issues.
LGNSW conducts an annual Environment Awards Program to reward and recognise councils, groups of councils, and council individuals who have undertaken progressive initiatives in environmental management and sustainability.
The awards are given in several categories and culminate in an awards event in early December each year.
